Taking wellness to another level

Salt Therapy – aka “halotherapy”, remains a fast and growing alternative way of wellness. (Halois Greek for salt.) Salt therapy is similar to spending time in the salty sea air, except it offers many more benefits than just relaxing on the beach.

Halotherapy is a holistic and alternative treatment that involves breathing in “pharmaceutical grade” salty air.

Research shows that Salt Therapy can treat respiratory conditions, such as Allergies, Asthma, COPD, Cystic Fibrosis, along with other chronic respiratory conditions. As well as, chronic skin conditions, such as Acne, Eczema, Psoriasis, etc.

Salt Therapy has also been shown to benefit anxiety, depression, ear infections, smokers cough, relief from the common cold, and much more.

The origins of halotherapy date back to the medieval era. But researchers only recently started studying its full potential benefits.

Halotherapy is usually broken down into dry and wet methods, depending on how the salt is administered.

At Serenity Salt Spa, we offer dry salt therapy in a custom-built salt room, otherwise known as a “salt cave”. A device called a “halogenerator” grinds salt into microscopic particles and releases them into the air of the room. Once inhaled, these salt particles are claimed to absorb irritants, including allergens and toxins, from the respiratory system. Advocates say this process breaks up mucus and reduces inflammation, resulting in clearer airways.

The salt particles have a similar effect on the skin, by eliminating bacteria and other impurities that are responsible for chronic skin problems.

Salt is also said to produce negative ions, which have been shown to release more serotonin, one of the chemicals behind feelings of happiness. Many people use Himalayan Salt Lamps to get the benefits of negative ions at home.

Ancient healers and philosophers recommended salt inhalation for the respiratory system and health problems.

Dry salt therapy originates from speleotherapy (salt cave therapy) and the Wieliczka salt cave in Poland, where workers exhibited fewer respiratory illnesses. There are thousands of salt rooms in Europe and beyond.

The benefits of salt therapy are wide-ranging, Salt levels affect our cell activity, energy, and blood sugar levels. A natural disinfectant, salt is antimicrobial and antibacterial. Salt comes in empty processed forms or healthier pure Himalayan Salt that contains 84 trace elements found in the human body

Dry salt air is more powerful than moist air.

The negatively charged ions in salt improve our health and mood. Inhaling particles can reduce inflammation and mucus in the lungs, improving respiratory conditions such as asthma, allergies, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, sinus congestion, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Scientific studies show that with attending regular salt therapy sessions, people with chronic respiratory conditions and other ailments, breathe easier after “halotherapy”.

The calming and detoxifying effects of halotherapy can support the immune, nervous and lymphatic systems. Additional benefits are reduced stress and headaches, increased energy, physical ailments for adults, children, athletes, and senior citizens. Treatments are recommended to help keep the body healthy during cold/flu or allergy seasons.

Skin conditions, such as acne, eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, and rashes have also been shown to improve with regular halotherapy sessions.

Table salt, sodium chloride, is dehydrating, but pure mineral salts have natural moisturizing properties and support the skin’s water balance and barrier function by attracting moisture to the skin. Minerals are necessary for cell function and detoxification, so mineral salts have strong rejuvenating properties.

The air in the salt rooms is saturated with minerals and negative ions providing a relaxing, de-stressing spa treatment with the bonus of non-invasive and entirely natural supplementation of micro-elements such as:

  • Calcium - body resistance, nervous system, bone system

  • Iodine - anti-sclerotic effect, normalizes fat transformation in the body and protects against radiation.

  • Iron - a cure for anemia, improves muscle strength and concentration, reduces susceptibility to infection.

  • Sodium - supports acidic-alkaline balance in the body, osmotic pressure, and cell energetics.

  • Bromine - lowers blood pressure, regulates the nervous system.

  • Trace elements Potassium, Magnesium, Copper, Selenium, and more

Benefits of Dry Salt Therapy for Children

As our world has become increasingly polluted, there has been a rapid escalation in respiratory problems for both adults and children. Asthma is the most chronic disease of childhood. In the U.S., it is estimated that nearly five million children have asthma, and those numbers are on the rise. Asthma is a leading cause of emergency room visits, hospitalization, and missed school days for children.

Children are more prone to breathing problems because their respiratory system does not fully develop until the age of nine. The narrowness of nasal passageways in children and their higher risk of picking up viruses contribute to the frequency and severity of colds/flu and other respiratory conditions. Also, their lungs have difficulty filtering out large pollution particles.

However, clinical studies show that children respond remarkably quickly to salt room treatments. Whether your child is suffering from allergies, an ear infection, frequent colds, or asthma, Himalayan Salt Therapy can help reduce inflammation, open clogged passageways, loosen up mucus, and kill germs and bacteria in your child’s respiratory system.

Also, salt therapy has been shown to boost the immune system, helping protect your child from future infections and illness. The negative ions in the salt can also help soothe and calm your child, easing hyperactivity and the stresses of illness and/or pain.

Our children’s room is specifically designed for infants and children up to 12 years of age. Our finely ground salt floor is like a large sandbox that your children can play in. We also have toys and books for your children to enjoy while they breathe in the healing salt and mineral-infused air. For your peace of mind and the safety of your children, we encourage parents with children under 12 years old to accompany their child in our salt room free of charge. Our children’s salt room also has a large door/window for easy monitoring of your child from outside the room.

*Effectiveness for these conditions is estimated up to 98% according to the clinical study “Halotherapy for Treatment of Respiratory Disease,” published in the Journal of Aerosol Medicine, Vol. 8, November 3, 1995.

Clinical trials of Dry Salt Therapy have been proven effective in relieving symptoms of a variety of respiratory and skin ailments. During one of the clinical trials, Salt Therapy resulted in improvement of the clinical state in:

  • 85% of mild to moderate asthma cases

  • 75% of severe asthma cases

  • 97% of chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, and cystic fibrosis
